Samuel N. Montgomery was born February 4, 1842, in Montgomery Township, Gibson County, Indiana.  He was farming at Cynthiana, Posey County, Indiana, when he enlisted in the 80th on August 18, 1862.  Less than 2 months later, Corporal Montgomery was seriously wounded by a musket ball during the October 8, 1862, fighting at Perryville, Boyle County, Kentucky.  For a time afterwards he was in an Army hospital at New Albany, Indiana, recovering.  As a result of his wounds, Corporal Montgomery was transferred from the 80th to the Veterans Reserve Corps (VRC) on January 15, 1864.  After his military service he returned to Cynthiana and resumed farming.  On November 2, 1865, he married Malissa Redman and together they had 8 children.  Samuel died June 19, 1916, and is buried in the New Liberty Cemetery in Cynthiana.  Photo and genealogical data are courtesy of Samuel's Great Granddaughter Juanita Montgomery Ruff and A Genealogical History of the Montgomery's and Their Descendants by D.
